iOS Second Phone Number App Exposes Private Messages, Raising Security Concerns
April 25, 2025
A popular iOS app offering users a second phone number has come under fire after a major privacy breach exposed thousands of private text messages. Cybersecurity researchers discovered that the app, which allows users to make calls and send messages via a secondary number, was inadvertently leaking user data through an insecure server configuration.
The breach, confirmed by independent researchers, revealed that messages, contact details, and even some voice call metadata were left unprotected on a public server for an unspecified period. According to the report, no encryption was in place, and access did not require authentication — meaning anyone who discovered the server could read user conversations in real time.
Security experts warn that such vulnerabilities are especially concerning given the app’s target audience, which includes journalists, activists, and business professionals who rely on second numbers for privacy.
Apple has yet to comment on the incident, though the app in question has reportedly been removed from the App Store pending further investigation. Meanwhile, the app’s developers issued a statement apologizing for the lapse and assuring users that immediate steps are being taken to secure the system and notify affected individuals.
Cybersecurity analyst Mira Patel stated, “This breach highlights the importance of end-to-end encryption and rigorous server testing, especially for apps handling sensitive communication.”
Users are urged to stop using the app immediately and check if any of their data may have been compromised. Experts recommend switching to trusted communication platforms that are transparent about their security practices.
This incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of third-party communication apps and reinforces the need for stricter oversight and data protection standards in the mobile app ecosystem.
