Earlier on Friday, NASA instructed the four-member Crew-12 team and another U.S. astronaut to enter their docked SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule and put on spacesuits as a precaution. The move was part of NASA’s “safe-haven” protocol, used when there is a potential threat to crew safety.

The alert was triggered while Russian cosmonauts were attempting repairs in the aging Zvezda service module, where a long-running air-leak problem has persisted for years. NASA said the leak rate unexpectedly increased, prompting concern that the situation could worsen during repair work.

After further assessment by NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos, the shelter order was lifted and the astronauts were allowed to return to the station.

Roscosmos later reported that two leaks had been detected in the transition chamber of the Zvezda module. One leak was successfully sealed with a special compound, while preparations continue to repair the second. The agency said the station’s internal pressure remains stable and there is no immediate danger to the crew.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the aging ISS infrastructure. Small leaks in the Russian segment have been monitored since 2019, leading to repeated inspections and repairs. Although Friday’s event prompted a rare evacuation-ready posture, the station has never required a full emergency evacuation in its 27-year history.

Samsung Electronics is facing one of the biggest labor crises in its history as tensions over AI-driven profits push more than 45,000 workers toward a planned 18-day strike beginning May 21. The dispute has exposed deep divisions inside Samsung’s semiconductor business at a time when the global AI boom has made chipmakers some of the world’s most valuable companies.

The conflict centers on how Samsung distributes the enormous profits generated by artificial intelligence demand. Samsung’s memory-chip division — which produces high-bandwidth memory and other AI-critical components — has benefited heavily from soaring demand from AI data centers and cloud companies. The company reportedly proposed bonus payouts exceeding 600% of annual salary for many memory-chip employees.

However, workers in Samsung’s struggling foundry and logic-chip divisions say they are being unfairly excluded. Those units manufacture advanced AI chips for companies including Nvidia and Tesla, yet their bonus offers were reportedly only around 50% to 100% of salary. Union leaders argue employees working side-by-side should not face such a massive compensation gap.

The dispute has become more dangerous for Samsung because rival SK Hynix has aggressively raised compensation and removed bonus caps, helping it attract top engineering talent during the AI semiconductor boom. Some Samsung employees told Reuters that engineers are already leaving for SK Hynix or transferring internally to Samsung’s memory division.

Analysts warn the strike could severely disrupt global semiconductor supply chains. Investment bank JPMorgan estimated Samsung could lose between 21 trillion and 31 trillion won ($14–21 billion) in operating profit if production is heavily affected. The South Korean government has reportedly expressed concern that a prolonged walkout could damage exports and broader economic growth.

The labor unrest also highlights a strategic problem inside Samsung. Unlike competitors such as TSMC or Micron Technology, Samsung operates a broad “one-stop” semiconductor model combining memory chips, chip design, and foundry manufacturing under one structure. The AI boom has made those divisions dramatically unequal in profitability, creating internal resentment over how rewards are distributed.

Samsung said it regrets the breakdown in negotiations and wants further dialogue with unions to avoid disruption. But union officials say strike plans remain active after government-mediated talks failed earlier this week.

The timing is especially critical because Samsung is trying to strengthen its position in advanced AI chips while competing against SK Hynix and TSMC in the race to dominate the next generation of AI infrastructure.

France’s highest administrative court, the Conseil d’État, has rejected a legal challenge by Amazon against the country’s minimum delivery fee for books sold online. The ruling is seen as a major victory for France’s long-standing effort to protect independent bookstores from the dominance of large online retailers.

The French government introduced the rule in October 2023. Under the law, online retailers must charge at least €3 for delivering book orders worth less than €35. Orders above that amount are exempt from the fee. The policy directly targeted ultra-cheap shipping practices, especially Amazon’s previous €0.01 book delivery offer.

Amazon argued that the measure was protectionist and violated European Union single-market rules. The company said the regulation unfairly favored physical bookstores and large retail chains with pickup locations while hurting readers, especially people living in rural areas without nearby bookstores. Amazon claimed the measure had already cost French readers more than €100 million and reduced access to books.

France defended the law as part of its broader “cultural exception” policy aimed at preserving literary diversity and protecting thousands of independent bookstores from aggressive price competition by tech giants. French officials argued that giant online platforms were using ultra-cheap delivery as a competitive weapon that smaller booksellers could not match.

The case had previously reached the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). In earlier proceedings, EU judges said the French rule could still be justified if it genuinely promoted cultural diversity and remained proportionate under EU law. France’s top court has now decided that the measure can stand.

The ruling highlights growing tension between European governments and global technology companies over digital commerce, taxation, and cultural protection. France has repeatedly introduced regulations aimed at limiting the market power of major U.S. tech firms in areas such as publishing, media, and online retail.

Years before OpenAI became a global phenomenon with ChatGPT, competition from Amazon may have helped convince Microsoft to deepen its partnership with the startup.

New reports and court documents suggest Microsoft’s aggressive early backing of OpenAI was not only about AI ambition — it was also a strategic response to Amazon’s dominance in cloud computing through AWS.

At the time, Amazon Web Services was the undisputed cloud leader, and Microsoft was searching for a breakthrough that could help Azure compete. According to court filings tied to the legal battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI, Musk himself pushed OpenAI toward Microsoft Azure as early as 2016 and reportedly dismissed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in internal conversations while advocating for Microsoft infrastructure.

That early cloud partnership evolved into one of the most important deals in tech history. Microsoft invested billions into OpenAI — including a landmark multibillion-dollar deal in 2019 and another massive investment in 2023 — long before ChatGPT became mainstream. The strategy gave Azure exclusive access to OpenAI technology and helped Microsoft gain ground in the AI cloud race.

Ironically, Amazon is now becoming one of OpenAI’s biggest partners.

In recent weeks, OpenAI loosened its exclusive arrangement with Microsoft, allowing Amazon to begin offering OpenAI models through AWS. Amazon and OpenAI also announced expanded cooperation on AI agents and cloud infrastructure.

Reports indicate OpenAI executives privately acknowledged that the Microsoft relationship, while “foundational,” also limited OpenAI’s ability to reach enterprise customers already committed to Amazon’s Bedrock platform. OpenAI reportedly described demand for its Amazon partnership as “staggering.”

The shift has created tensions between the longtime partners. Earlier this year, reports emerged that Microsoft considered legal action over OpenAI’s huge AWS deal, arguing it could violate Azure exclusivity clauses.

Analysts now see the AI industry entering a new phase where OpenAI is no longer tied primarily to Microsoft. Amazon, Google, Oracle, and others are competing to host and distribute OpenAI technologies as the company expands beyond the structure that helped launch ChatGPT.

Amazon’s cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), has largely restored services after a major outage at its Northern Virginia data center caused widespread disruptions across online platforms and enterprise systems.

The incident began Thursday when a rapid temperature increase at a single AWS facility in Northern Virginia reportedly caused power failures and service interruptions. AWS said engineers responded immediately and that recovery efforts were progressing, though complete restoration could still take several hours.

The outage affected several high-profile companies and digital services, including cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, which later confirmed that its systems had been restored. Some users also reported issues involving financial and trading infrastructure linked to CME Group, although the exact connection to the AWS outage remained unclear.

Northern Virginia hosts AWS’s critical “US-East-1” cloud region, one of the world’s largest concentrations of data centers. Because many global apps and businesses rely heavily on this region, even localized failures can trigger worldwide disruptions.

Industry analysts say the outage highlights growing infrastructure challenges tied to modern AI and cloud computing workloads. Advanced servers generate extreme heat, forcing operators to invest heavily in cooling systems and power management. Reuters noted this is the second significant overheating-related issue involving AWS facilities in recent months.

AWS has experienced several notable outages in the North Virginia region over the years, including disruptions in 2017, 2021, and 2025 that impacted major internet services globally

A significant legal proceeding involving Meta Platforms is underway in the U.S. state of New Mexico, with potential implications for the operational design and regulatory oversight of major social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.

Case Background

The lawsuit, initiated by the State of New Mexico, alleges that Meta failed to implement adequate safeguards to protect minors. Specifically, the state argues that the company’s platform design contributes to compulsive usage patterns and exposes younger users to harmful and, in some cases, exploitative content. The complaint further asserts that Meta misrepresented the safety standards of its services.

Prior Ruling

In March 2026, a jury found Meta liable under consumer protection laws and awarded approximately $375 million in damages. This verdict marked a notable development in ongoing legal challenges targeting social media companies over user safety and platform accountability.

Current Trial Phase

The present bench trial will determine the scope of remedial measures Meta may be required to implement. Potential court-mandated changes include:

Enhanced age verification and identity assurance mechanisms

Adjustments to content recommendation algorithms, particularly those affecting minors

Restrictions on engagement-driven design features, such as autoplay and infinite scrolling

Strengthened detection and prevention systems for harmful or illegal content

Additionally, the state is seeking substantial financial penalties—reportedly in the billions of dollars—to support long-term public health and youth protection initiatives.

Meta’s Position

Meta has contested the feasibility and legality of several proposed measures, arguing that certain requirements may be technologically impractical and could raise concerns related to privacy rights and freedom of expression. The company has indicated that, under extreme regulatory constraints, it may consider suspending services within New Mexico.

Broader Implications

The outcome of this case is expected to carry significant weight beyond a single jurisdiction. Similar legal actions have been initiated across multiple U.S. states and by numerous educational institutions. A ruling imposing strict compliance obligations could establish a precedent for regulatory frameworks governing digital platforms, potentially influencing global standards for online safety and platform design.

Amazon is preparing for one of its largest hiring pushes, but with a twist: much of the recruitment process will be handled by a new generation of agentic artificial intelligence systems designed to act more like human assistants than traditional software.

The company has introduced an AI-driven hiring platform—part of its broader “agentic AI” strategy—that can independently carry out tasks such as screening candidates, conducting interviews, and generating evaluations. Unlike older automation tools, these systems are built to take initiative, make decisions, and interact conversationally, functioning more like digital recruiters than static programs.

AI-Led Hiring at Massive Scale

Amazon’s new system is aimed at solving a long-standing challenge: hiring hundreds of thousands of workers quickly, especially during peak seasons like holidays.

The AI platform can:

Conduct interviews around the clock

Analyze resumes and match candidates to roles

Generate detailed feedback for human recruiters

This allows Amazon to dramatically speed up hiring timelines, reducing delays that often come with manual processes.

Instead of replacing recruiters entirely, the system is designed to handle repetitive, high-volume tasks, freeing human staff to focus on final decisions and candidate experience.

The Push to “Humanize” AI

A key part of Amazon’s strategy is what it calls making AI more human-centered.

Internally, the company is emphasizing:

Natural, conversational interactions between AI and candidates

Transparency—informing applicants when they are interacting with AI

Systems that adapt to human behavior rather than forcing rigid workflows

The goal is to reduce the cold, mechanical feel often associated with automation and instead create an experience that feels closer to speaking with a real recruiter.

What Is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI refers to systems that can:

Act independently

Plan and execute multi-step tasks

Make contextual decisions

In Amazon’s case, this means AI doesn’t just assist—it can run entire workflows, such as managing the early stages of hiring without constant human supervision.

The company is also exploring similar AI agents in other areas like logistics, customer service, and internal operations.

Hiring Push Amid Job Cuts

The announcement comes at a time when Amazon—and the broader tech industry—has gone through significant layoffs over the past few years.

Despite this, Amazon continues to:

Invest heavily in automation and AI

Expand hiring in key areas, including internships and operational roles

This reflects a broader shift in the job market: AI is changing the nature of work rather than eliminating it entirely. Roles are being redefined, with greater emphasis on oversight, decision-making, and collaboration with AI systems.

Concerns and Criticism

The move has raised several concerns:

Loss of human touch: Candidates may feel disconnected if most interactions are with AI

The surge in spending reflects a strategic shift among leading firms including Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, all of which are committing substantial capital toward AI infrastructure. These investments are primarily focused on expanding data centers, developing advanced semiconductor capabilities, and scaling large AI models.

Strong Growth in Google Cloud

Google Cloud has reported robust growth, with revenue increasing significantly year-over-year. The performance is being driven by rising enterprise adoption of AI-powered services and the company’s integrated technology stack, which combines custom-designed chips, cloud infrastructure, and proprietary AI models.

Analysts note that Google’s vertically integrated approach is strengthening its competitive position, particularly as businesses seek reliable, scalable AI solutions.

Escalating Capital Expenditure Across Big Tech

The broader technology sector is experiencing an unprecedented wave of capital expenditure:

Alphabet Inc. plans to invest heavily in AI infrastructure this year

Combined, these efforts are expected to push total AI-related investment close to the $700 billion mark, underscoring the scale and urgency of the competition.

Investor Scrutiny Intensifies

Despite strong top-line growth, investors are increasingly focused on profitability and return on investment. The scale of capital deployment has raised concerns about potential pressure on cash flow and the long-term sustainability of such high levels of spending.

Market participants are seeking clearer evidence that AI investments will translate into durable revenue streams and operational efficiencies, rather than remaining long-term speculative bets.

Diverging Market Reactions

Financial markets have responded unevenly to recent earnings announcements. Companies demonstrating clear AI-driven revenue growth—particularly Alphabet Inc.—have seen more favorable investor sentiment. Others have faced pressure due to escalating costs and uncertain near-term returns.

Outlook

The accelerating AI investment cycle is reshaping the competitive dynamics of the technology sector. Companies that successfully integrate infrastructure, software, and AI capabilities are likely to gain a sustained advantage.

At present, Google Cloud appears well-positioned, signaling a potential shift in leadership within the global cloud and AI market.

A major focus for investors is the massive spending on AI infrastructure. Hyperscalers are expected to invest more than $600 billion in 2026 alone, funding data centers, chips, and cloud systems needed to power AI technologies. While this spending has boosted related sectors—especially semiconductors—it has also raised concerns about whether these investments will generate sufficient returns.

Analysts warn that capital expenditures could rise to extremely high levels, potentially reaching close to 90% of operating cash flow for some companies by 2027. This makes upcoming earnings reports especially important, as investors want clear evidence that AI investments are translating into revenue growth, particularly in cloud computing and digital advertising.

At the same time, market sentiment has become more cautious. Reports that OpenAI has struggled to meet growth expectations have sparked doubts about how quickly AI products can be monetized, leading some investors to scale back positions in big tech stocks ahead of earnings.

Because several of these tech giants are reporting results around the same time, markets could see increased volatility. Even though options markets currently expect moderate price movements, unexpected earnings results could trigger sharp swings as investors reassess which companies are leading—or lagging—in the AI race.

Overall, this earnings season is shaping up as a good moment: it will help determine whether the AI boom continues to fuel stock market growth—or whether concerns about high spending and uncertain returns begin to weigh on valuations.
